Film Micrœview #63: My Winnipeg (2007)

My Winnipeg

Rating: Good.

This is the first film by Guy Maddin I’ve seen. This guy has truly developed his own film language. The blend of repetition, layering, juxtapositioning, free associating, and pastiching styles was unlike anything I’d experienced before. While I’m not sure how much more I actually know about either him or Winnipeg, and I can’t say that the film “moved” me, I was deeply engaged with his communication technique, and will be excited to see what other stories he grinds out through it.
