Film Micrœview #74: Mr. Arkadin (1955)

Mr. Arkadin

Rating: Shrug.

Certainly my least favorite Welles film I’ve seen so far by far. It felt like Welles was hyperparodying himself. The low angle, constant camera movement, deep staging was dialed to 11. Not a second went by when someone wasn’t speaking a mile a minute. Welles played some Freudian avatar. I think I get the gist that the secret was there was no secret and it was about mediocrity projecting and auto-cannibalizing. Whatever. Guess it was pretty amusing as a document of itself though — the production certainly seemed fraught with struggle.
