Film Micrœview #123: Tokyo Twilight (1957)

Tokyo Twilight

Rating: Good.

Harsh, brutal, sharp, melancholy, depressing, intense… this makes Floating Weeds seem flamboyant and trivial by comparison. Definitely the hardest film by Ozu I’ve seen. Few punches pulled. Some scenes seem to have peppy score underneath because they’d be too hard to swallow without.

Lighting is more expressive here than is typical for Ozu. The hazy clubs get a little noir.

A lot more happens in terms of plot, too, and it lasts longer. Oy.
