Film Micrœview #166: Damnation (1988)

DamnationRating: Dr. Pepper.

This feels like a sweet spot in Bela Tarr’s trajectory for me. I can take 9 hour movies with event-less 45 minute long takes, but here’s him taking on pretty much a noir. The music, as usual, by Mihaly Vig invades your mind. Tarr’s post-communist dystopia carries universal meaning. No surprise he meant to be a philosopher. Rain, pouring. Dogs, becoming. Hope, drifting.
