Film Micrœview #278: Early Spring (1956)

Rating: Good.

Less imaginative ellipsis than the best Ozus. Not the darkest I’ve seen but relatively intense conflict. Interesting to learn more about cultural associations in Japan between the salaryman phenomenon and adultery. No one character does a particularly good job of confronting the issues but they all do make an admirable effort to grit their teeth, swallow, and keep going. Perhaps Ozu is saying that sometimes this is all we can expect of ourselves realistically.
