Film Micrœview #300: Ghost in the Shell (1995)

Rating: Shrug.

My second time watching this. First time was when I was a kid. Although I couldn’t have been too young because wtf this was made in 1995? It looks like it was made at the height of the 80’s, judging by the pastel cyan and fuschia and general style. Also The Matrix came out only 4 years after this? Anyway, I certainly don’t remember it being about the cross-pollination of man and machine (er, an ambiguous man in a machine with an ambiguous machine in a man). Cyber-reproduction over cyber-sex. I only remember the battle with the tank and shoot up of the evolutionary tree.

So I’ll give it points for artsy pacing and sequences and visuals (the city’s water is like its ghost). But not nearly as profound or revolutionary as it is made out to be.
