Film Micrœview #314: The Handmaiden (2016)

Rating: Shrug.

Sorry, I’m just not that into the crafts of:

  • melodramatic stories of betrayal within betrayal within betrayal with emo score,
  • elaborately out-of-order revelations of key plot information (including rewinds and rewatches with new perspectives),
  • elaborately costumed and produced period pieces,
  • softcore porn.

If I were, I would have loved this film. Unfortunately, I am not.

Also I am burdened with an obsession for Park’s earlier film Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and have found time after time that his other work doesn’t speak to me in the same way, so I get unduly biased against it.

What I did appreciate about this film was:

  • Its feminist agenda,
  • Its quintessentially Korean self-deprecation.
