Dream 476: Element of Von Trier

A woman dressed in billowing white steps out of an unfolding pure white onto a bright white sandy beach. It’s the opening to Von Trier’s new film.

Eddie is sitting in one of many sparsely placed chairs in a sprawling kiva, experiencing a new Georg Friedrich Haas immersive musical piece.

The end of Von Trier’s film is a montage to R.E.M.’s It’s the End of the World.

I feel like Von Trier has done it again. Genius. Another person critiques the film though, pointing out that in his research he discovered that all of the film’s episodes are based on true life stories chosen exclusively for their shock value. So the effect is not really surrealism. Though Von Trier still deserves some credit for the acting, production design, cinematography, etc.
